Incentive Publications specializes in middle school educational resources and effective teaching strategies for grades K-12. The company offers more than 400 titles that are available through over 2000 retailers and distributors (including Barnes & Noble) nationally and internationally—and now titles are also available in e-book format online. Privately owned and located in Nashville, TN, IP publishes books written by a wide array of top educator-authors dedicated to research and practical classroom know-how. IP publications are used by educators--both teachers and administrators-- and parents (including homeschoolers) to help their students enjoy the learning process and do it more effectively. IP publications are correlated to or written based on learning standards and testing benchmarks. IP is a member of the National Middle School Association, the Association of Educational Publishers, and the National School Supply and Equipment Association.
IP began in the heart and mind of Imogene Forte in the mid 1960’s while teaching at Peabody University, now a part of Vanderbilt University, in Nashville, TN. She heard continual pleas from her former graduate students for up-to-date, ready-to-use classroom resources—in addition to standards textbooks. So, as good teachers do, Imogene and a few hand-picked colleagues gave them what they needed. They created supplemental resources of classroom activities, strategies, and innovative ideas and provided these resources to their students. The teachers and students loved them! The demand for and excitement over these books continued to grow and in 1968 Incentive Publications was incorporated--a real company, originally owned and operated by 3 teachers. From the small town of Celina, TN, the daughter of a successful retailer had captured her calling and passion.
Since that beginning many things have changed at Incentive Publications, but IP has remained true to that original calling Imogene heard: educators need innovative, engaging resources--and as a professional publisher, IP has a responsibility to continue creating them. The culture developed at IP by Imogene Forte and her husband Henry encourages a steadfast dedication to the continuation of that mission.
After focusing on the development of K-8 educational resources for more than 25 years, in the mid 1990’s, IP began to devote more of its efforts to educational materials specifically for middle schoolers, grades 5-8, and teaching strategies books for educators of all grades K-12. Those remain the current areas of concentration and focus in 2006 and the foreseeable future.
The IP family greatly misses Imogene who passed away in 2005 but know that she’d be proud that IP continues to be a vibrant organization publishing new and even better educational materials for hundreds of thousands of teachers, educational administrators, parents, and children in the U.S. and abroad.
